State Farm® and the National Safety Council are working together to help improve your driving skills by offering the NSC Defensive Driving Course. These classes provide a refresher course in the driving laws in your state and teach you strategies that may help you avoid collisions and traffic violations. You can take the course online at your own pace or in a classroom setting. Once successfully completed, a certificate must be presented to your State Farm agent.
Online Course
A highly interactive and engaging 4-hour online program that focuses on hazard recognition and collision avoidance techniques. The course addresses common driving violations that result in collisions and how to change driving habits to eliminate moving violations.
The course is presented in six sessions:
Classroom Course
Like the online program, the NSC 8-hour classroom defensive driving course focuses on hazard recognition, collision avoidance and how to drive defensively in unpredictable conditions. This highly interactive instructor-led course includes a defensive driving self assessment risk survey, and participants will learn why choosing safe, responsible and lawful driving behaviors makes personal and financial sense.

How do I get my completion certificate after taking the course?
Once you've completed your online course, you can print your certificate immediately. If you take the course at an NSC Training Center, your instructor will give you a certificate after you've successfully completed the classroom course.
How much does the Defensive Driving Course cost?
The online program is $24.95, with 20% of the proceeds going towards NSC life-saving initiatives, including opioid misuse, teen driving, distracted driving and many others. Classroom courses do cost more. Cost varies based on what the training center chooses to charge. Please contact your training center directly.
How long does it take to complete the course?
The online course takes about 4 hours to complete (6 hours in New York). The classroom courses run 4, 6 or 8 hours in length, depending on your state. Contact your local training center to learn about course duration and cost.
