Online Course

A highly interactive and engaging 4-hour online program that focuses on hazard recognition and collision avoidance techniques. The course addresses common driving violations that result in collisions and how to change driving habits to eliminate moving violations.

The course is presented in six sessions:

• It's All About Choices: Determine your personal driving profile, driving attitudes and behaviors
• Ready for the Road: Various conditions – controllable and uncontrollable – affect your driving; learn defensive driving techniques to compensate for those situations, as well as vehicle maintenance and occupant protection
• Don't Add Insult to Injury: This session covers impaired, distracted, fatigued and aggressive driving, and managing your emotions while driving
• Success on the Road: Learn six of the most unsafe driving behaviors, plus practice hazard recognition, driving scenarios and how to apply safe driving techniques
• Collision Prevention: Real-life driving reenactments illustrate the steps to preventing collisions; you'll also learn to identify road sign shapes
• Drive for Life: Develop defensive driving habits and recognize personal accountability for your driving behaviors and decisions

Classroom Course

Like the online program, the NSC 8-hour classroom defensive driving course focuses on hazard recognition, collision avoidance and how to drive defensively in unpredictable conditions. This highly interactive instructor-led course includes a defensive driving self assessment risk survey, and participants will learn why choosing safe, responsible and lawful driving behaviors makes personal and financial sense.

The classroom course features:

• Videos with real-life driver simulations, hazard recognition and vehicle maintenance checkpoints
• Interpersonal activities, case studies and small-group discussions
• Defensive Driving Self-Assessment Risk Survey, which allows participants to evaluate their own attitudes and behaviors when they are driving
• Critical discussions on distracted driving and the dangers of cell phone use
• Instructor multimedia presentation with animated graphics, traffic simulations and embedded video

How do I get my completion certificate after taking the course?
Once you've completed your online course, you can print your certificate immediately. If you take the course at an NSC Training Center, your instructor will give you a certificate after you've successfully completed the classroom course.

How much does the Defensive Driving Course cost?
The online program is $24.95, with 20% of the proceeds going towards NSC life-saving initiatives, including opioid misuse, teen driving, distracted driving and many others. Classroom courses do cost more. Cost varies based on what the training center chooses to charge. Please contact your training center directly.

How long does it take to complete the course?
The online course takes about 4 hours to complete (6 hours in New York). The classroom courses run 4, 6 or 8 hours in length, depending on your state. Contact your local training center to learn about course duration and cost.

What if there are multiple drivers on the same insurance policy purchasing this course?
If there are multiple drivers on the same insurance policy purchasing this course, you MUST make sure all drivers are logged out of the NSC LMS before the next user makes a purchase. If there are multiple learners using the same computer to complete the course, be sure to log out each time you exit the course and make sure your name is displayed at the top of the screen when you log in. You may also need to clear your internet browser cache and cookies before logging in.

Alabama
You may be eligible for a discount for taking a defensive driving course if you meet all of the following criteria:

• Are the principal driver of the vehicle
• Are at least 55 years of age
• Have voluntarily completed within the last three years a Motor Vehicle Accident Prevention Course

Such courses must be taught for a minimum number of hours as determined by the Department of Motor Vehicles.

A certificate must be presented to State Farm showing the course was successfully completed.
