June Is National Safety Month
Stand Up to Falls
On Feb. 16, 74 year-old Al Trombley got a call that his brother Jim had fallen and was being taken to the hospital. Al's sister Karen was also in a hospital at the time due to complications from a fall in 2014. All of this was apparently too much for Al's previously diagnosed irregular heartbeat and he too was admitted to a hospital.
Since recovering and witnessing the physical, emotional and financial challenges faced by his siblings, Al wishes other seniors would understand what increases the risk of a fall and take preventive measures to stay safe and independent, such as having eye examinations, taking classes that challenge their balance and installing grab bars in their homes.
Falls are a leading cause of reduced independence for older adults with 1-in-4 over the age of 65 falling every year. More than 28,000 older adults died in 2015 due to a fall.
You can help Al spread his message by by partnering with the National Safety Council to prevent falls and keep each other safe with your donation today during National Safety Month.
