Itasca, IL – The National Safety Council was saddened to learn that Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg fell in her office Wednesday night, reportedly fracturing three ribs. Even for people who regularly exercise, as Ginsberg is reported to do, falls are far too common. They are the No. 1 cause of preventable death for adults age 65 and older and have skyrocketed – increasing 130% – among those 75 and older in the last 15 years. But falls affect all age groups, claiming more than 34,000 lives in the U.S. in 2016.
Falls are not a natural part of aging and can be prevented. People should speak with their doctor about their personal fall risk. The National Safety Council wishes Justice Ginsburg a speedy and safe recovery.
