NSC Statement on Biden Administration's Drug Policy Priorities

Plan lays out urgent steps that must be taken to address the addiction epidemic in the U.S.

April 05, 2021

Itasca, IL – The National Safety Council supports the Biden-Harris Administration’s Statement of Drug Policy Priorities, which lays out the urgent, first-year steps that must be taken to address the overdose and addiction epidemic in the United States. These seven key priorities reflect what NSC and more than 60 other organizations and companies called for last year in a comprehensive National Plan to Address Opioid Misuse. Authored and released by NSC, the plan provided a holistic approach to tackle the epidemic – from prevention to recovery, from education to the criminal justice system, from prescribers to employers.

A focused approach to reducing these deaths and saving lives is more important than ever, as America is facing the single worst drug crisis in its history. The COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated the problem, with new data showing that in the 12-month period ending in August 2020, the United States exceeded 88,000 overdose deaths – a 27% increase over the same period in 2019. NSC continues to lead organizations in addressing opioids in the workplace to prevent these deaths, as well as support those struggling with opioid misuse, and applauds the government’s holistic approach to saving lives and addressing this critical issue.
