National Safety Council Statement on AAA Foundation Research on Vehicle Infotainment Technology

Researchers measure the cost of cognitive distraction.

June 27, 2018

Itasca, IL – The National Safety Council applauds the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety for again examining the correlation between distraction and infotainment systems – both the systems that are designed as part of the vehicle and those available through app developers. The technology in our vehicles makes it easier than ever to be constantly connected. However, this research clearly shows that convenience can still come at a grave cost. Once again, AAA and researchers at the University of Utah have reinforced an inconvenient truth: In-vehicle technology is distracting.

While technology has created a nation of distracted drivers, future advances in technology may help solve this problem. But as AAA and researchers at the University of Utah have again found, all technology available to us today must be improved before it can be considered safe to use while driving.

The results of this study reinforce the urgency of addressing the human-machine interface and ensuring that safety, rather than connectivity be prioritized behind the wheel. With 40,000 fatalities on our roadways last year, we need more engaged, not less engaged, drivers to be on the Road to Zero and commit to keeping each other safe.
