Investing in worker safety not only saves lives, it drives economic growth.
WASHINGTON, D.C. – The National Safety Council is a proud member of the Intersociety Forum (ISF), a coalition of leading safety organizations that recently published a timely report titled, Core Principles of Modern Occupational EHS Practice.
The report demonstrates how organizations can achieve better business outcomes by moving beyond minimum compliance and implementing comprehensive, risk-based safety programs. These findings align with the longstanding mission of NSC to eliminate preventable deaths in workplaces across America.
"This data confirms what safety professionals have long understood: Investing in worker protection not only saves lives but also drives economic growth and operational excellence," said Mark Chung, executive vice president of safety leadership and advocacy at NSC.
The coalition's research comes at a critical time. Despite technological advances, workplace safety statistics have remained constant, with the Bureau of Labor Statistics reporting that in 2023, one worker died every 99 minutes on the job.
The ISF report outlines a framework built on three essential elements: integrating worker wellbeing into safety standards, implementing comprehensive risk management systems and utilizing leading indicators to prevent incidents before they occur. The report quantifies how strong safety cultures lead to higher employee engagement, reduced turnover and improved productivity in ways that should capture the attention of every executive team.
The report includes action steps for organizations of all sizes and invites businesses to demonstrate their commitment by scanning a QR code to endorse these principles. The coalition plans to share these insights with federal regulators when OSHA's new leadership is confirmed.
NSC encourages all employers to review the report and consider how these evidence-based approaches could transform their safety performance while strengthening their organizational resilience.
