NSC Partners with Nissan on Vehicle Recall Campaign

Automaker eager to inform drivers about safety benefits of ‘Check To Protect’ initiative.

March 08, 2019

Itasca, IL – The National Safety Council is pleased to welcome Nissan Group in support of its Check To Protect coalition, which seeks to reduce the number of vehicles with open safety recalls.

Nissan and the Council will work together to spread the word to vehicle owners about the importance of checking for open safety recalls and, if applicable, getting their vehicles repaired for free at an authorized dealership. Vehicle owners of every make and model can learn their vehicle’s recall status quickly by visiting CheckToProtect.org.

Nissan joins Fiat Chrysler Automobiles and Toyota Motor North America as Check To Protect partners. Other organizations working with the Council to reduce open recalls include AARP, Governors Highway Safety Association, National Automobile Dealers Association, National Independent Automobile Dealers Association, National Auto Auction Association and more than a dozen states.

"When vehicle owners ignore open recalls they are putting their loved ones and others on the road potentially in danger," said Nick Smith, interim president and CEO of the National Safety Council. "We want owners to check their vehicles in order to protect the loved ones who ride with them. We’re so grateful to Nissan for taking a leadership role in this campaign."

Nearly 1 in 4 vehicles on the road today has an open, unrepaired safety recall. Some owners are not aware of their vehicle’s recall status, while others know they have a recall but do not perceive the issue to be important. Many of these existing recalls involve defective Takata airbags that have the potential to spray sharp metal fragments into the vehicle, causing injuries or even death to drivers or passengers if these defective airbags deploy.

The Council and Nissan will increase recall awareness through community outreach events, ad campaigns, social media efforts, dealership participation and more.

"Nissan is committed to the safety and security of our customers and their passengers," said Selim Hammoud, Director of Product Safety for Nissan North America. "It is vitally important that owners know what recalls apply to their vehicles and to have remedy work completed as soon as possible. Nissan Group supports the important work of the National Safety Council and its ‘Check to Protect’ initiatives."
