NSC Statement on Bipartisan Safer Communities Act

If enacted, legislation would be a significant step in addressing firearm safety.

June 24, 2022

Itasca, Ill. – The National Safety Council is encouraged to see the release of the Senate-proposed Bipartisan Safer Communities Act. If this piece of legislation is enacted, it would be the most significant step in addressing firearm safety America has seen in decades.

As outlined in the NSC policy position on safe firearms, the Council supports the legislation’s inclusion of background checks and the expansion of Extreme Risk Protection Orders (or red flag laws). NSC also prioritizes firearm injury prevention research, which has seen improvement through the appropriations process, and is invigorated by the proposed House FY2023 Departments of Labor and Health and Human Services bill increasing these critical research dollars. However, NSC continues to highlight other firearm safety provisions, including safe storage, smart gun features and employer choice of whether to allow firearms in its facilities. The Council is also encouraged to see the authorization of funding for mental health support, as NSC believes this focus would play a pivotal role in improving firearm safety across the nation.

The bipartisan agreement to prioritize this matter is a more-than-needed step in the right direction; continuing to work with policymakers to improve gun safety in the United States is imperative. NSC supports this bipartisan process in promoting firearm safety and stands ready to serve as a willing and able resource to increase safety from the workplace to anyplace.
