The Commission will look to the Safe System Approach to redesign transportation systems, engage communities and enhance mobility for all road users.

January 15, 2025

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The National Safety Council applauds New Jersey for its proactive step in traffic safety with the signing of Assembly Bill 1476/Senate Bill 361, establishing the New Jersey Target Zero Commission. This landmark legislation underscores the state's unwavering commitment to eliminating traffic fatalities and serious injuries by 2040 through a comprehensive and equitable approach to road safety.

By prioritizing the Safe System Approach, the Target Zero Commission will leverage data-driven strategies to redesign transportation systems, engage communities, and enhance access and mobility for all road users, including pedestrians, cyclists and motorists. NSC is particularly encouraged by the Commission's emphasis on equity and inclusivity in its vision for safer roadways.

"The Target Zero Commission is a vital step toward creating a future where no lives are needlessly lost on New Jersey’s roads," said Lorraine Martin, NSC president and CEO. "We commend Governor Murphy, the Legislature and all stakeholders involved for their leadership in advancing road safety. NSC looks forward to collaborating with New Jersey to achieve our shared goal of zero traffic fatalities and serious injuries."
