WASHINGTON, D.C. – The National Safety Council applauds the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) for finalizing a needed and sensible new regulation that ensures construction workers are supplied properly fitting personal protective equipment (PPE) at their jobsite.
“For too long, workers have endured an unnecessary hazard on the jobsite – PPE that doesn’t fit and therefore makes them less safe,” said Lorraine Martin, President and CEO. “NSC is pleased to see this common-sense, lifesaving measure become final. OSHA’s leadership ensures more workers will get home safe and sound at the end of their day.”
Construction workers face potential hazards every day at worksites all across the United States. When a hazard cannot be eliminated, substituted or engineered out, PPE is one of the last tools to protect workers from being harmed or killed while carrying out tasks. Properly fitting PPE, including gloves and safety helmets, has the ability to shield workers from serious injuries caused by hazards such as falling objects, chemical spills and heat.
Through a collaborative process that included industry stakeholders, the Advisory Committee on Construction Safety and Health, the Small Business Administration, and safety advocates, OSHA has crafted a rule that will protect workers and will not overly burden small businesses.
NSC looks forward to working with OSHA to offer educational materials and resources about the final rule to our members and partners in the construction industry dedicated to safety.
