NSC Statement: Rebuilding American Infrastructure with Sustainability and Equity Program Funding

This year's $2.2 billion investment will transform communities across the U.S.

August 15, 2022

ITASCA, Ill. –The National Safety Council congratulates the 166 projects awarded funding through the Rebuilding American Infrastructure with Sustainability and Equity program. The $2.2 billion investment will transform communities across the U.S. into places where all roadway users experience safe, accessible and resilient mobility.

This funding is needed now more than ever, as the country continues to face historic and devastating fatality rates. This past year, the nation witnessed more than 46,000 family members, friends and neighbors lose their lives to traffic violence. The funding awarded this week reflects a continued commitment from President Biden and his administration in creating a future where everyone arrives home safely. Further, the emphasis this program is giving to historically disadvantaged communities and areas of persistent poverty is recognition of the vital role transportation plays in mitigating economic barriers and building connections.

“The projects funded today leverage proven tactics, community input and a desire for change to create safe and resilient communities,” said Mark Chung, executive vice president of roadway practice at NSC. “We need the innovation and decisive action demonstrated in these efforts to address the crisis on America’s roads.”

The projects chosen represent both existing best practices, including implementing the Safe System approach, and planning for a multi-modal future. As these 166 initiatives are funded, NSC looks forward to continuing to engage with the RAISE program and communities across the nation as well as finding ways to support their contributions to achieving zero traffic deaths.
