WASHINGTON, D.C. – The National Safety Council applauds today's release of the Saving Lives with Connectivity: A Plan to Accelerate V2X Deployment roadmap by the United States Department of Transportation. This roadmap lays the groundwork to invite federal and state partners, private industry and safety advocates together to harness the power of wireless technology to save lives on our nation’s roadways. In 2022, 46,027 people died in motor vehicle crashes. Preventable deaths like these are unacceptable, and with increased partnership and collaboration, deployment of V2X technology across the transportation and infrastructure network will save lives.
NSC is the convener of the Road to Zero Coalition and the lead safety advocate of the Safe System Approach to eliminate fatal motor vehicle crashes. Through the Road to Zero Coalition, NSC advocates for the adoption of lifesaving in-vehicle technologies to keep road users safe, with a particular focus on vulnerable road users given the increase of fatalities year over year. V2X technology allows vehicles to wirelessly communicate with other vehicles, road users and roadway infrastructure to exchange information about their speed and position, traffic, road conditions and other factors that can impact safety. The deployment of this technology, in combination with advanced driver-assistance technologies including automatic emergency braking, are critical components of advancing the safer vehicles pillar of the Safe System Approach.
