Itasca, Ill. – The National Safety Council applauds the Senate confirmation of Steve Cliff as the administrator of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). With roadway fatalities continuing to rise at devastating rates across the country and vehicle safety technology requirements needing development and implementation to save lives, the agency and its partners have more than enough work to go around.
As outlined in the National Roadway Safety Strategy by the U.S. Department of Transportation and the Road to Zero Coalition report, a Safe System approach, when implemented equitably, takes a holistic look at roadway safety to address and mitigate risks and ensure all road users are safe. With a national goal of zero fatalities and a commitment to a Safe System approach, NHTSA should prioritize the realization of the safer road users, safer vehicles, safer roads, safer speeds and effective post-crash care elements of the Safe System approach.
It is clear Administrator Cliff and NHTSA can’t do this alone. NSC and the Road to Zero Coalition look forward to working with Administrator Cliff and other partners in putting safety first and helping more people return home to their loved ones safely.
