NSC CEO Delivers Testimony to House Subcommittee on Emerging Workplace Safety Issues

Lorraine Martin’s testimony highlights SIF prevention, worker wellbeing and road safety solutions.

May 13, 2026

WASHINGTON, D.C. – National Safety Council CEO Lorraine Martin today delivered oral testimony on Building a Safer Future: Private Sector Strategies for Emerging Safety Issues to the U.S. House of Representatives Committee on Education and Workforce, Subcommittee on Workforce Protections.

Martin’s testimony focused on three areas that will define and shape the future of workplace safety. The three topics are:

  • Serious incident and fatality (SIF) prevention: Strong modern safety programs must focus on identifying hazards and implementing controls to stop injuries and deaths before they occur
  • Worker wellbeing: Supporting safer workplaces increasingly involves considering the broader conditions that affect workers, including mental health, fatigue, stress and impairment
  • Roadway safety: Transportation incidents are the leading cause of on-the-job deaths; improved interagency collaboration and increased adoption of lifesaving technologies are vital to saving lives

“Eliminating preventable deaths and injuries is within our reach, but only if we leverage emerging best practices and technologies,” Martin said.
