NSC to Turn Chicago Green for 25th Anniversary of National Safety Month

NSC encourages Chicago buildings to turn their lights 'safety green' in observance June 21-27.

May 27, 2021

Itasca, IL – Since 1996, the National Safety Council has observed June as National Safety Month. This year, National Safety Month turns a quarter of a century old, and NSC continues to focus on timely topics as well as its quest to turn Chicago “safety green” to help keep each other safe, from the workplace to anyplace.

“At the National Safety Council, we understand this past year is one for the record books,” said Lorraine Martin, NSC president and CEO. “We learned firsthand how our work to enhance safety never stops and is only timelier during National Safety Month. Saving lives and preventing injury has been our mission for over a century, which we celebrate by putting the spotlight on safety for 30 days every June. Across the Chicago skyline, that spotlight is quite literal with buildings turning their lights ‘safety green’ in observance.”

For its 25th anniversary, National Safety Month continues to focus on topics the world is currently facing, including incident prevention, ongoing COVID-19 safety concerns, psychological safety and continuous safety improvement. The 2021 campaign also features the work of our SAFER initiative – a multifaceted, comprehensive effort aimed at helping employers prioritize safety as the workplaces expand operations in the midst of the ongoing pandemic. To conclude the observance, NSC is encouraging buildings and skyscrapers in Chicago and surrounding area to turn their lights “safety green” June 21-27.

“Safety is a journey, not a destination. We invite buildings and skyscrapers across Chicago to participate by shedding a green light on safety,” said Martin.

Thank you to the following Chicago skyscrapers that have already signed on to join NSC in turning “safety green” for National Safety Month:

  • Willis Tower
  • Water Tower Place
  • Prudential Plaza
  • 151 N. Franklin
  • USG at 550 W. Adams St.
  • Blue Cross Blue Shield Tower
