Statement from NSC President and CEO on Need for Maryland Employers to Assist with Contact Tracing

Employers can help limit COVID-19 transmission by increasing contact tracing efforts.

July 31, 2020

Itasca, IL – “As Maryland and other states across the U.S. continue to contend with COVID-19, increased safety measures are more critical than ever. Contact tracing is an indispensable tool. Employers, in particular, can help greatly in this area, and we’re seeing new data that indicates their involvement is imperative. Fifty-four percent of Maryland residents with COVID-19 diagnosis were not working remotely when they tested positive, meaning traditional workplaces can be super spreaders very easily.

“While state and local health departments are responsible for conducting COVID-19 case investigations and contact tracing, employers can help limit COVID-19 transmission in workplaces by increasing the speed and efficiency of these efforts. The National Safety Council has been leading the call for contact tracing to be a required element of reopening plans. Further, NSC has developed a policy position on contact tracing that public and private sector leaders can adopt and follow.

“Earlier this month, NSC and nearly 50 partner organizations with employees across the country penned a letter to the National Governors Association urging state officials to lead on contact tracing protocols, as well as testing. We urge Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan to be among the number of governors leading on this issue, not only to help avoid further infection but also to help aid our economic recovery. Preventing coronavirus spread in workplaces is a critical component of both.”
