On June 8, at the 2023 Labor Division spring meeting in St. Paul, Minnesota, Ray Paige, IBT Local 1150, and Rick Martagon of Building Strong Communities, presented at an educational session on expanding apprenticeship programs.
Building Strong Communities is a multitrade apprenticeship readiness program that connects women, minorities and veterans with building and construction trade careers. BSC provides knowledge and skills needed to enter a union-registered apprenticeship program. In 2024 and 2025, as part of a partnership with BSC, union construction trades and North Hennepin College in Minnesota, students can earn 4 college credits while attending an apprenticeship readiness program. Courses include interpersonal skills and foundational construction math. Graduation coincides with start of 2024-25 construction seasons. Learn more about the program.
