Program Technical Consultant, Driver Safety, Education and Training

Ryan Pietzsch is program technical consultant, driver safety, education and training, at the National Safety Council. An innovative leader and educator with expertise in risk management and strategic planning, Ryan is focused on total quality improvement in safety on the road.

Ryan is responsible for advancing NSC driver training content, directing the NSC International Advisory Committee and advising the Council on matters of driving regulations and standards. He has conducted large-scale needs assessments and has developed training in a diverse array of disciplines.

Prior to joining NSC, Ryan developed and managed the delivery of emergency services risk management education and training with VFIS, a division of AIG and the largest insurer of emergency services organizations in North America. During his time there, he created and updated nearly 30 training programs and managed the transition from classroom delivery to blended learning and online training, evolving a legacy risk management organization into the modern classroom.

An Iowa native, Ryan began his safety career as a firefighter, progressing through the fire service ranks to Career Fire Lieutenant in the West Des Moines Fire Department. He served as Public Information Officer and Safety Officer at various emergency events, and in addition to his fire and EMS duties, Ryan took on an active role in establishing total quality management in the municipal government. He developed emergency action plans, trained regionally in fire service operations and became a leading management trainer in the city.

Ryan earned his bachelor’s degree from Grand View College in Des Moines, Iowa, and his master’s in safety, security and emergency management from Eastern Kentucky University in Richmond. He holds a number of professional safety-related certificates, and serves on technical and advisory committees. He resides in Mechanicsburg, Penn., with his wife and daughter and is an active volunteer firefighter with the Silver Spring Community Fire Company.
