Musculoskeletal disorders, or MSDs, are the most common workplace injury, affecting workers across all industries and costing businesses billions annually. Recognizing this pervasive challenge, the National Safety Council launched the MSD Solutions Lab in 2021 with funding from Amazon to develop innovative solutions for preventing MSDs. At the heart of this initiative is the MSD Pledge, a global employer-led movement designed to build safer workplaces. This commitment encourages organizations to focus on three key areas: risk reduction, innovation and collaboration, and safety culture.

The recently released 2023-2024 MSD Solutions Index Community Report provides compelling evidence that the MSD Pledge community is creating measurable improvements in workplace safety. Based on survey responses from 44 MSD Pledge members, the report showcases how these companies are advancing MSD prevention efforts, highlights key areas of success and identifies some opportunities for growth.

Significant Progress Across the MSD Pledge Community

This year’s MSD Solutions Index report revealed encouraging trends that demonstrate the positive impact of the MSD Pledge, including:

  • Higher overall performance: More than 81% of participating organizations achieved advancing or proactive scores, with nearly 12% earning the innovating designation – a category not reached in the previous survey cycle.
  • Widespread ergonomics adoption: Nearly 89% of organizations now report having ergonomics or MSD prevention programs in place, up from 83% last year. Organizations with these programs consistently scored higher in all aspects of MSD prevention.
  • Proactive prevention practices: An increasing number of organizations (65%) are prioritizing leading indicators – such as early intervention and engagement in training – over lagging indicators such as injury rates. This shift underscores a stronger focus on preventing injuries before they occur.
  • Enhanced worker engagement: About 84% of respondents have methods in place for workers to share safety improvement suggestions. This inclusion is linked to stronger safety cultures, overall MSD prevention efforts and greater organizational trust.
  • Expanded collaboration: The report highlights a notable increase in sharing MSD prevention successes. Nearly 77% of organizations now share solutions externally, fostering a collaborative spirit across industries.

Key Takeaways for Driving Further Safety Improvements

While the MSD Pledge community has made substantial strides since being launched in June 2022, the report identifies areas where organizations can continue to grow. Notably, the following recommendations are important strategies for further reducing MSD risks:

  • Engage leadership in safety culture: A strong safety culture is foundational to effective MSD prevention. Leaders must actively champion safety initiatives and model behaviors that prioritize worker wellbeing.
  • Empower employee collaboration: Involving workers in decisions related to job design, task workflows and safety processes fosters a more engaged workforce and helps identify practical, effective solutions.
  • Set clear risk reduction goals: Organizations that define measurable objectives for reducing MSD risks are better positioned to track progress and achieve meaningful improvements.
  • Leverage technology and innovation: Emerging tools such as ergonomic assessment technologies, automation and predictive analytics can help reduce MSD risks and improve efficiency.
  • Address non-physical risk factors: Stress, fatigue and other psychosocial factors play a significant role in MSD risks. Tackling these issues through perception surveys, supportive policies and wellness programs can complement physical safety measures.

Proving the Power of Collaboration

The MSD Solutions Index underscores that organizations committed to the MSD Pledge are not only making progress but also helping shape a culture of shared responsibility for workplace safety. By continuing to prioritize proactive measures, foster innovation and embrace collaboration, organizations can build on these successes and help create a future where MSDs are no longer the leading workplace injury.
