Each year, National Work Zone Awareness Week, observed April 21-25, serves as a vital reminder of the dangers in work zones. These high-risk areas demand caution to prevent injuries and fatalities among both road users and the essential workers who maintain our nation's infrastructure. National Safety Council is committed to advancing work zone safety through data-driven insights, training resources and advocacy efforts.

The Risks of Work Zones

Work zones are essential for maintaining and improving our roadways, but they also present significant risks. According to NSC Injury Facts, thousands of crashes occur in work zones each year.

In 2022 alone, 891 people were killed and nearly 38,000 were injured in work zone crashes. While the majority of these fatalities were drivers and passengers, 175 workers also lost their lives while doing their jobs in work zones.

Key factors include:

• Distracted driving
• Speeding
• Failure to follow posted warnings and signals

National Work Zone Awareness Week Call to Action

This year's theme, "Respect the zone so we all get home," emphasizes our shared responsibility to protect both the workers who put themselves at risk to improve our roadways and the travelers passing through these areas. Organizations and individuals can participate by spreading awareness, using safety measures and joining training opportunities.

Whether you are a worker setting up a construction zone or a driver navigating through one, your actions matter. By staying alert, reducing distractions and adhering to safety guidelines, we can prevent tragedies and ensure everyone returns home safely.

Here are some key safety tips from the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration:

For Drivers:

• Stay alert and minimize distractions like texting or eating
• Obey posted speed limits and prepare for sudden stops
• Merge early when lane closures are indicated
• Maintain a safe following distance
• Follow flagger instructions and road signs

For Workers:

• Wear high-visibility clothing and protective gear
• Use proper signage and barriers to direct traffic safely
• Establish clear communication protocols with other workers and drivers
• Be aware of moving vehicles and machinery at all times

Training and Resources to Improve Work Zone Safety

To help mitigate risks, NSC offers a comprehensive Work Zone Safety Training Program for workers, supervisors and organizations. It’s designed for all experience levels, ensuring everyone understands how to navigate and maintain safe work zones.

Topics include:

• Proper work zone setup and traffic control procedures
• Best practices for protecting workers and vehicle operators
• Identifying and mitigating common work zone hazards
• Effective communication strategies
• Guidelines for emergency preparedness and incident response

NSC also offers a Safe Driving Toolkit with resources to reduce distractions, manage speed and navigate work zones responsibly.
