Defensive Driving Instructor Courses Now More Convenient

The National Safety Council has made it easy to become a Certified Defensive Driving Course (DDC) Instructor with new eLearning Instructor Certification.

eLearning Instructor Certification Training delivers high-quality instruction in an interactive, web-based environment. Each program provides the core knowledge about NSC Defensive Driving Courses, facilitation techniques and guidelines, and the required training skills to deliver a successful driver improvement program. With eLearning training, you can:

  • Schedule training at your convenience
  • Eliminate travel planning and expenses
  • Experience less time away from work

To become certified to teach Professional Truck Driver, Chronic Offender, Attitudinal Dynamics of Driving, Alive at 25, DDC 4, and DDC 8/6 through our eLearning Instructor Certification Program, NSC recommends instructor candidates first attend the DDC course they wish to teach. Candidates also must successfully complete the following DDC eLearning sessions:

  • Unit 1 – DDC Foundation: Introduces Defensive Driving Principles, reviews standards and regulations required to facilitate NSC courses and discusses terminology, including defensive driving, preventable collisions, crash vs. collision, and the DDC Collision Prevention Formula
  • Unit 2 – DDC Facilitation: Covers the instructor's role and responsibility in the classroom and helps the instructor identify learning styles of participants; you will learn techniques of proper classroom management
  • Unit 3* – Choice Theory: You will read Choice Theory by William Glasser, MD, and pass an online test with 100% accuracy before proceeding to the online module; you will learn to apply Choice Theory techniques in DDC programs to help learners identify and adopt new behaviors
*Unit 3 Choice Theory required for Alive at 25, Attitudinal Dynamics of Driving and Chronic Offender
  • Unit 4 – DDC Course-Specified Instructor Training: You will be taught the course curriculum comprehensively for the specific course you plan to instruct

Candidates also must be observed by a training center representative instructing the course in a classroom. Upon successful completion of these requirements, you will be issued an instructor credential.

IMPORTANT: State regulators in New York, New Jersey, Virginia, Connecticut and Texas mandate that NSC customize its driver safety training (DDC) so drivers that complete our program in those states can take advantage of the state's driver benefits (insurance discounts, ticket dismissal, point reduction). In order to teach an NSC DDC program in these states, additional NSC training beyond the eLearning Instructor Development Course is required. Contact NSC at (800) 432-5251 to learn more.
