Senior Program Manager, Road to Zero

Jane Mellow is the National Safety Council manager of the Road to Zero Coalition, a national organization of more than 900 businesses, federal, state and local government entities, and advocacy groups dedicated to eliminating road traffic deaths by 2050. The Coalition’s plan to reach this goal includes three main strategies: doubling down on what works, accelerating advanced technology and prioritizing safety.

Jane brings more than two decades of policy, communications and management experience to her work at the National Safety Council, with extensive experience in transportation policy.

Before NSC, Jane served as an appointee in the U.S Department of Transportation for seven years during the Obama Administration. Jane was director of public affairs for the Federal Highway Administration and helped coordinate the launch of the Road to Zero Coalition. Previously, she directed the Government and Public Affairs Office for U.S. DOT’s Office of Research and Technology, where she worked with the Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) program, including the connected vehicle program’s Safety Pilot, which informed decisions about advanced technology in vehicles.

Prior to joining U.S. DOT, Jane was the director of the Washington office for the State of Illinois. She also brings 15 years of Capitol Hill experience as a senior policy staffer for Congressman Bob Wise and as legislative director for Sen. Robert C. Byrd.

Jane is a graduate of West Virginia University, where she earned a bachelor’s degree in journalism and a master’s degree in political science. She lives in Maryland with her family, including 17-year-old twins who are new drivers.
