NSC Statement on Biden Administration Budget Priorities

Budget priorities align with NSC focus.

April 13, 2021

Itasca, IL – The National Safety Council is pleased to see a reflection of NSC priorities in President Biden’s Discretionary Funding Request for FY22, in particular the Administration’s focus on investments to strengthen public health infrastructure, transportation equity, protections for American workers and ending the opioid epidemic.

Given its ongoing focus on workplace, roadway and impairment safety, NSC supports the following key priorities as part of the President’s discretionary funding request:

  • The historic $10.7 billion investment to help end the opioid epidemic would facilitate many of the priorities laid out in the comprehensive National Plan to Address Opioid Misuse, authored and released by NSC and more than 60 other organizations and companies
  • $8.7 billion to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention will address the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and ensure future public health readiness
  • $2.1 billion for the Department of Labor worker protection agencies, which would improve workplace health and safety
  • $1.6 billion for the Community Mental Health Services Block Grant to address the increased need for mental health services
  • A targeted $295 million toward modernization and rehabilitation of public infrastructure and facilities in historically underfunded and marginalized communities
  • $110 million for a new Thriving Communities initiative to foster transportation equity

NSC applauds this holistic commitment to ensuring public safety as well as ensuring that past inequities are addressed throughout the Administration’s funding priorities. We look forward to partnering with policymakers, federal agencies and the business community to enable all people to be safe, from the workplace to anyplace.
