Amy Lavalle’s 19-year-old son, Phillip, was hit and killed by a distracted driver while out on a training run on Aug. 8, 2013, in Otsego, MN.

Phillip was a record-setting runner for Monticello High School. After graduation he was recruited to a Division 1 college, South Dakota State University, where he ran both cross country and track and was pursuing a degree in civil engineering. His dream was to run at the 2016 Olympics in Rio.

Since his death, Amy and Greg LaValle have been speaking to local high schools, driver’s education classes, local businesses and giving community presentations on distracted driving. In April 2016, they hosted the first annual Just Drive Day to raise awareness about distracted driving. In 2017, they added an additional community to host a Just Drive Day event also. They would like this to become a movement and are working to engage more communities to hold Just Drive Day events as well. They have a non-profit organization called Just Drive, Inc.
