NSC Flame of Life Award
National Safety Council presents the Flame of Life® award to individuals and organizations that bring significant contributions and long-term dedication to injury and illness prevention. Presented only a handful of times in the past 45 years, Flame of Life is a special designation based on extraordinary achievement in the field of safety.
Most recently, the Flame of Life was presented to the Honorable Elizabeth Dole and the Allstate Foundation.
Former North Carolina Sen. Elizabeth Dole has worked in the administrations of five presidents. As secretary of transportation from 1983 to 1987, she influenced President Reagan and Congress to enact the 21-year-old drinking age, and issued a landmark regulation that resulted in widespread enactment of state safety belt laws and air bags in all cars. These initiatives have been credited in saving an estimated 460,000 lives to date.
As secretary of labor from 1989 to 1990, she continued to make safety and health leadership her hallmark. Among many OSHA actions under her guidance was the Lockout-Tagout Standard, which establishes procedures to safeguard more than 39 million workers and prevent an estimated 120 fatalities and 50,000 injuries each year.
As president of the American Red Cross from 1991 to 1999, she led the transformation of the way the Red Cross collects, tests and distributes half of the nation's blood supply.

Since 1952, Allstate Insurance and the Allstate Foundation have worked tirelessly to reduce car crashes involving teen drivers by changing the dialog around teen safe driving. Programs such as Save 11, Keep the Drive and Act Out Loud have helped rally teens to advocate for their own safety and the safety of their peers.
Since 2005, thanks to a $43 million investment in resources and messaging, teen traffic deaths have been reduced by nearly 48%.
Allstate Foundation continues to support a wide range of programs that reach millions of parents, teens, educators, community members and traffic safety professionals with messages about safe driving.
