National Transportation Safety Board Releases 2021 Most Wanted List

NSC fully supports the list, which highlights transportation safety efforts needed now to save lives.

April 07, 2021

Itasca, IL – The National Safety Council applauds the National Transportation Safety Board on its 2021 Most Wanted List, released April 6. The biennial list serves as a guide for action, as well as a reminder to all of what still needs to be done to enable safe mobility for all people. NSC commends the NTSB for including the following items, which closely align with the Road to Zero strategy to end roadway deaths:

  • Eliminate Distractions
  • Prevent Alcohol- and Other Drug-Impaired Driving
  • Require Collision-Avoidance and Connected-Vehicle Technologies on All Vehicles
  • Implement a Comprehensive Strategy to Eliminate Speeding-Related Crashes
  • Protect Vulnerable Road Users Through a Safe System Approach

NSC was pleased to see this list released during Distracted Driving Awareness Month

Despite the drop in miles driven in 2020, roadway fatality estimates were the highest they’ve been since 2007, as motor-vehicle crashes remain a leading cause of death for people of all ages. NSC recognizes some of the primary causes of crashes continue to be speeding, distraction, as well as impairment, and we know more than half of those killed in crashes are unbelted. To achieve zero traffic deaths by 2050, we need to embrace a safe system approach, implement and develop life-saving technologies, and double down on proven countermeasures and strategies.

NSC has called on the Biden administration to do more to protect roadway users, including publicly committing to the goal of zero traffic deaths. We are grateful to NTSB for their leadership and are committed to helping address the issues on the Most Wanted List through efforts including the Road to Zero Coalition, so we can achieve safer mobility for all.
