INDIANAPOLIS – The National Safety Council announced the recipients of the 2026 Green Cross for Safety® Awards. Winners were celebrated during the 27th annual Green Cross Celebration, presented by U. S. Steel, in three categories: safety advocacy, safety excellence and safety innovation.
Nine finalists for the three award categories were selected, reviewed and evaluated. The 2026 winners are:
Recognizes those who have made a significant impact on safety by raising awareness and bringing about change.
Recognizing the critical importance of drivers slowing down and moving over for roadside workers and responders, Flagman spearheaded a proactive prevention-focused initiative to address the root cause of crashes involving roadside personnel: driver awareness and behavior.
The Flagman K-12 Road Safety Education Outreach Program instills in future drivers the importance of slowing down, moving over, avoiding distractions and keeping roadside responders safe, laying the crucial groundwork for the next generation of safe drivers. Through interactive student outreach and partnering with emergency responders, Flagman has achieved distinguished success in improving roadway safety awareness, reducing preventable crashes and saving lives.
Recognizes a corporation, coalition or organization that was relentless in its pursuit of safety.
To address preventable motor vehicle crashes – one of the most persistent safety risks facing its field workforce – the AT&T National EH&S Organization embarked on a comprehensive safety transformation by strategically implementing solutions and best practices to keep its employees and others on the road safe.
This transformation integrated predictive analytics, training, leadership coaching and advanced safety technologies into a unified safety ecosystem, utilizing GPS and telematics data to proactively identify hazard patterns and address forecasted risks through targeted mitigation. From 2024 to 2025, the organization achieved a 15.4% reduction in total motor incidents as a result of its safety transformation. AT&T has nurtured an effective and preventive safety culture that has accomplished measurable success in safeguarding its workforce and helping make the roadways safer for all.
Recognizes a researcher, corporation or organization that approached a long-held challenge and developed a transformative response to the problem.
To address the routine safety risks its roadway workers experience due to prolonged exposure to live traffic, the Clayton County Water Authority (CCWA) championed innovation to implement an integrated solution that keeps workers safer amid unpredictable traffic patterns during temporary traffic control (TTC) operations.
The CCWA developed the M.I.T.C.H.™ (Mobile Illuminated Traffic Control Hub) 2.0 to deliver a more advanced and comprehensive roadway safety solution. Largely created in-house, the M.I.T.C.H.™ 2.0 integrates traffic control signage, arrow boards, lighting, intrusion-alert technologies and equipment storage into a single, solar-powered platform that streamlines work zone deployment and minimizes worker exposure to hazards. By achieving a 23% reduction in worker exposure since implementation, the CCWA has created and implemented a groundbreaking solution that directly translates into safer workers and roadway users.
In addition to recognizing this year’s award recipients, the Green Cross Celebration raised over $660,000 to help advance the safety education, solutions and resources that empower employers and individuals to stay safe at work, on the road and everywhere in between.
"Safety moves forward when organizations challenge assumptions, rethink processes and invest in solutions that protect people before a hazard occurs," said Lorraine Martin, NSC CEO. "This year's honorees exemplify that mindset. Their work demonstrates how leadership, innovation and a commitment to continuous improvement can create meaningful change for workers, families and communities."
