NSC Names Amy Miles 2025 Borkenstein Award Recipient

Forensic toxicologist honored for quarter-century contributions to public safety.

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The National Safety Council Alcohol, Drugs and Impairment Division (ADID) has selected Amy Miles as the 2025 Robert F. Borkenstein Award recipient.

“Amy has made exceptional contributions to the field of forensic toxicology and traffic safety, and is dedicated to improving public health and highway safety,” said Dr. Barry Logan, NSC 2024 Distinguished Service to Safety awardee. 

Recognized for her exemplary career in forensic toxicology over the last quarter century, Amy is steadfast and proactive in improving highway safety and public health in Wisconsin and nationwide. She has established herself as a key proponent for optimizing toxicology to enhance public safety, as she has furthered the advancement of research, consulted with national and local law enforcement and led groundbreaking initiatives.

“Amy is a passionate national education and resource leader in forensic toxicology who is engaged with professionals in several other fields involving drug-impaired driving and oral fluid drug testing,” said Dr. Michael Corbett, NSC ADID immediate past chair.

Amy currently serves as program project manager and national resource toxicologist at the Wisconsin State Laboratory of Hygiene and project manager of the Society of Forensic Toxicologists – National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) Regional Toxicology Liaisons. Since joining NSC ADID in 2011, she has co-authored several iterative published recommendations for the Toxicological Investigation of Drug-Impaired Driving and Motor Vehicle Fatalities. With assistance from NHTSA, she championed increased funding for forensic labs nationwide. A recognized expert in alcohol, drugs and human performance toxicology, she delivered hundreds of presentations, contributed to numerous national publications and is a National Judicial College faculty member. She co-chairs the Overdose Biosurveillance Task Force of the Association of Public Health Laboratories, is a past president of the Society of Forensic Toxicologists and a board member of the National Alliance to Stop Impaired Driving.

The award, founded in honor of Robert F. Borkenstein, a pioneering and dedicated highway safety researcher and advocate who invented the Breathalyzer®, recognizes individuals who, through a lifetime of service, have made outstanding contributions to the field of alcohol- and drug-related traffic safety. Honorees are selected by professionals in the NSC ADID.

Amy was formally presented the award in Baltimore, Maryland, Feb. 16, 2025.
