Making the Business Case for Safety Innovation with Vital Signs Monitoring Wearables

In the last decade, there were an estimated 438 heat-related workplace fatalities in the United States, or an average of 44 per year. Vital signs monitoring wearables are sensor-equipped, body-worn devices that continuously monitor key health indicators, such as body temperature, heart rate, blood pressure and exertion levels. These devices can alert workers when early signs of heat stress appear, prompting them to rest, recover and hydrate before symptoms worsen. For employers, aggregated data from these devices can help identify the tasks, time of day or conditions linked to higher heat stress. These insights can inform scheduling, hydration protocols and engineering controls, strengthening the organization’s overall heat mitigation strategy.
