NSC Congratulates Sullivan County on Reaccreditation as a Safe Community

The county was first accredited as a Safe Community in 2012

Itasca, IL – The National Safety Council and Safe Communities America congratulate Sullivan County, Tenn., on its reaccreditation as a Safe Community. The designation recognizes the county for effectively using evidence-based and promising strategies to keep its residents safe and free from injury.

Reaccreditation as a Safe Community confirms Sullivan County's commitment as a leader in promoting safety.

"This reaccreditation recognizes Sullivan County as an example to other municipalities for best practices furthering safety," said Carrie Nie, director of Safe Communities America. "It is clear members of the Sullivan County coalition are dedicated to creating a Safe Community. They have been consistent in their efforts for many years, and they are open to innovative ideas and methods to improve their work. In addition, they are focused on growing and enhancing the partners involved in the coalition."

During its reaccreditation ceremony Jan. 18, Sullivan County will host a mini site visit and present its mission and vision for the Sullivan County coalition. In addition, it will highlight its new Data Systems program and how data is being applied.

"One of the most important functions of our government is to provide safe, secure communities for our citizens," Sullivan County Mayor Richard S. Venable said. "I congratulate all our officials who have had a hand in achieving, yet again, this important designation for Sullivan County."

The Sullivan County coalition has a stable home within the Kingsport Area Safety Council, which has served the community for more than 70 years. The coalition's main focus areas are traffic safety, emergency preparedness and the prevention of older adult falls, substance misuse and violence. The coalition is expanding the type of data sources to which it refers so it can better understand the needs and concerns of the community.

According to the NSC State of Safety Report, more than 70 percent of the preventable deaths in the U.S. occur in homes and communities. No state received an "A" for safety in the report, and Tennessee received a "C" overall. However, Sullivan County is an example of how efforts at the local level can create safer spaces in which to live, work and visit. Sullivan County was the first in Tennessee and the 19th in the United States to be recognized as an international Safe Community.
