Mark Chung Appointed to U.S. DOT Transforming Transportation Advisory Committee

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The National Safety Council  is proud to announce its executive vice president of roadway practice, Mark Chung, was named to the 27-person Transforming Transportation Advisory Committee (TTAC) launched by the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT). This committee will advise DOT and the Secretary of Transportation to help shape the federal approach to transportation innovation. 

“I’m honored to join this diverse committee of experts dedicated to improving transportation safety in the United States,” said Chung. “It’s going to take a comprehensive and collaborative effort by us all to make a difference, and I am committed to using my voice, expertise and perspective to advocate for safety solutions to create a future of mobility that is more equitable and sustainable for all road users.” 

TTAC members serve two-year terms and may be reappointed. DOT selected individuals with in-depth knowledge of their respective industries or sectors and worked to achieve the most diverse and comprehensive points of view. The first TTAC meeting will be held on Jan. 18. The Committee will explore and consider issues related to:

• Pathways to safe, secure, equitable, environmentally friendly and accessible deployments of emerging technologies
• Integrated approaches to promote greater cross-modal integration of emerging technologies, in particular applications to deploy automation
• Policies that encourage innovation to grow and support a safe and productive U.S. workforce, as well as foster economic competitiveness and job quality
• Approaches and frameworks that encourage the secure exchange and sharing of transformative transportation data, including technologies and infrastructure, across the public and private sectors that can guide core policy decisions across DOT’s strategic goals
• Ways the Department can identify and elevate cybersecurity solutions and protect privacy across transportation systems and infrastructure
• Other emerging issues, topics, and technologies

Chung is responsible for leading roadway safety initiatives at NSC that range from overseeing and growing defensive driving programs to managing the Road to Zero Coalition. Chung draws upon years of strategic and business leadership experience with the automotive industry. During his tenure with SAE International, Chung helped accelerate the organization’s broader transformation into becoming an industry-convening, growth-oriented, knowledge-based organization that served the automotive, aerospace and commercial vehicle sectors.
