National Safety Council Reintroduces My Car Does What?

Vehicle safety technologies are constantly being updated, and so are the resources to help you understand them. Check out what's new.

January 31, 2023

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The National Safety Council launched new resources, including videos and blogs, on its website: MyCarDoesWhat.org. The website’s purpose is to educate the general public on vehicle technologies or advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) available now and how to correctly use them to improve safety on the roads.

Now more than ever, roadway users of all modes need to be armed with the latest research, resources and messaging around what works to keep us safe. According to NSC estimates, more than 46,000 people lost their lives to traffic violence in 2021. This is an epidemic on our roadways. Existing technologies can save thousands of lives each year. For example, ADAS alone can save up to 10,000 lives per year. We will only realize the full safety benefits of vehicle design if we know what features exist, their limits, how they intersect with one another and other vehicles, and the responsibility we have as roadway users to contribute to a safer environment.

New resources launched this week include:

● An organized overview of the safety features available in specific vehicle types
● Short, simple explanations of what these different technologies can (and can’t) do
A robust video library to help drive this information home

Hundreds of millions of cars on our roads have safety technologies – many of which are required – that help reduce the risk of crashes and deaths. NSC urges the U.S. Department of Transportation to require these newer ADAS safety features in new vehicles to save lives.
